The possibility of extensive automation of repetitive jobs had been lurking round the corner for decades. Now, with the advent of machine learning and artificial intelligence the scope of automation has increased manifold. It appears that even the essentially creative roles are not out of reach for AI driven systems.

There is hardly a role that cannot be automated

The Washington Post has an AI reporter called the Heliographer which had penned 850+ articles in 2017 alone. In a talk show not long ago, the prodigious ML algorithm developer Tanmay Bakshi said that he has developed an algorithm that can recognize musical patterns and create original music of classical standard in a matter of minutes. These stories serve to show how close AI is to disrupting the job market completely.

Staying at the other end of disruption

There are few employees in the IT sector who have not felt a chill in view of the recent developments of AI. However, Gartner has some good news; they assume that integration of AI will actually create more meaningful opportunities for the human workforce. A workforce that combines automation and human brains could prove greatly beneficial for the industries. It is a famous contention that in order to survive the disruptions created by AI one has to master it. Undergoing a Machine Learning training course looks like the most viable idea to make it possible.

Easier said than done

A survey of 1500 firms reveals that 65% of the responding companies are hitting a brick wall when it comes to distribution of labour between human workers and AI. Only 3% of them have had some success in terms of re-skilling the employees. For the rest the chasm is a challenging reality. A large number of skills are becoming obsolete while there is a terrible lack of personnel with the emergent skills. Take Accenture for example, Paul Daugherty, a CIO and CTO at Accenture informed that automation has eliminated around 23,000 roles at the company. The staff have been redeployed but the possibilities of large-scale layoffs cannot be ignored.

Accenture has released the beta version of an app that takes into consideration the resumes of the employees and determines how likely and how soon their roles are to be automated. Not only that, this machine learning fuelled app also creates suggestions for the employees following which they can choose ideal re-skill options.

Machine learning training is the last stand

Machine learning has brought in the wave for automation and a lot of jobs will be taken over by machines but feeding accurate data, well-formed algorithms, developing and controlling machines is still reserved with humans. Therefore, even when the whole job market is struck by automation you stay afloat in the market provided you are trained in machine learning.
